Transitions Group

Graduation from the Academy is an intimate experience for most of our seniors and their families. Over the years, alumni continued to stop by the school needing staff assistance with college, loan, and job applications. Alumni were stopping by to have conversations about life decisions and how to stay connected to an educational community. It became more evident to staff that this would continue to be a growing need as we increased the number of graduates each year. Thus, the Alumni Transition Group was born.  The focus of the group is to have alumni accomplish future academic or employment goals. Both areas are needed due to an interest in changing employment and in building more skills as the alumni become more mature.

The Group explored how to learn what career fields would suit their interests and skills by exploring personality traits and using skill assessments.

Other topics of discussion include:
  • Completing job applications
  • Resumes and cover letters
  • Interviewing skills
  • Job searching
  • Career fairs
  • Networking
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Evaluating and negotiating the job offer
  • Choosing a college
  • Visiting a college
  • Financial aid and paying for college
  • Skills for college students

The Transition Group meets once a month for 1 and 1/2 hours. Each alumni attending are given one-to-one instructions and goal setting for the following month. The alumni  also receive support from other alumni attending the group and from the facilitator.
