Writing Group

Our after-school Writing Group is hosted by local poet Wendy Brown-Baez. She has worked with the school two years in a row. Ms. Brown Baez is a published poet and participates in the publishing and performing arts community around the Twin Cities. She first introduced all students to poetry and spoken word in a classroom lesson. Then, students had the opportunity to attend an after-school session to learn more about the writing process. Afterwards, students committed to attending the eight writing group sessions. The students prepared pieces to read aloud at an Assembly and Parent Event. Students also recorded their written pieces. Their recorded readings traveled in an art installation starting at the Academy in September 2009 and around the community both in Saint Paul and Minneapolis through 2010. Here is how each student who participated in the writing group improved their reading scores as measured by the NWEA. The average improvement was six points. The average growth target is 2-4 points.
